The Prophet (SAW) said: “When menstruation starts, leave off Salah”.
2. Tawaf of the Ka’bah
The Prophet (SAW) said: “Do everything the Hajj (Pilgrim) does, but don’t perform Tawaf of the House (Ka’bah) until you become purified.”
As A’isha (RAA) narrated: “When we menstruated (during the lifetime of the Prophet (SAW) we were ordered to make up for the left fasting (of the month of Ramdan) and we were not ordered to make up for Salah.”
4. Sitting in the Masjid
A’isha (RAA) relates that the Prophet (SAW) said: “I do not make lawful the masjid for menstruating women or for one who is in a seminally defiled state [junub]”. (Sunan Abu Dawud)
Umm Salama ra related that the Prophet (SAW) entered the courtyard of the masjid and announced aloud, “The masjid is not permitted for the seminally defiled and for the menstruating women.” (Tabarani)
A’isha (RAA) relates that the Prophet (SAW) called out from the masjid, “O ‘A’isha, hand me the cloth.” She told him that she was menstruating, so he said the menstruation is not in her hands [i.e. that she could hand him the cloth. Note: the door of her chamber opened up into the masjid]. (Sahih Muslim)
It is forbidden upon the husband to have intercourse with the menstruating wife, as it is forbidden for her to let him, based on the Statement of Allah:“They ask you concerning menstruation. Say: that is an Adha (a harmful thing for a husband to have a sexual intercourse with his wife while she is having her menses), therefore keep away from women during menses and go not unto them till they are purified (from menses and have taken a bath). And when they have purified themselves, then go in unto them as Allah has ordained for you (go in unto them in any manner as long as it is in their vagina).” (V.2:222)
6. Recitation of Qur’an
‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar relates that Prophet (SAW) said, “A menstruating women or a seminally defiled person should not recite any part of the Qur’an.” (Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Sunan al-Bayhaqi)
Dhikr Or saying Allahu Akbar or Subhan Allah, or Al-Hamdulillah or Bismillah before eating or any other action, or reading Hadith or Fiqh, or making Du’a or saying Amin to someone else’s Du’a or listening to recitation of Qur’an, none of that is prohibited: The Prophet (SAW) used to rest on A’isha’s (RAA) lap while she was menstruating, and he would recite Qur’an.
Allah knows Best.
